How Laminate Flooring Is Made

Laminate flooring has been available in the market since the 1970s when it was first introduced as an affordable alternative to the expensive hardwood flooring. Like the name suggests, laminate floors are mainly made of different layers. A typical laminate floor has four different layers which include the balancing (bottommost) layer, the inner core layer, the pattern (image design) layer and the wear (uppermost) layer. The balancing layer
This is the bottom most layer which acts as the balancing or stabilizer. However, its main functions go beyond stabilizing the plank. This layer also prevents moisture penetration which often causes wood to warp.

The core layer
The inner core is a high density fiberboard that has undergone saturation in resin for increased toughness as well as water resistance.

The pattern layer
Also known as the image design layer, this thin layer comprises a paper printed with high resolution images of wood grain, metal or stone finish. It is the layer that makes your laminate flooring look natural.

The wear layer
The topmost wear layer comprises of clear melamine resin and is basically included to protect the flooring from wear, scratches, gouges, stains, moisture penetration and daily wear and tear. Manufacturing process

The manufacturing process of laminate flooring takes a short time but is often very intense. All the four layers are combined and bonded in a high pressure process where the temperatures can go beyond 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The pressure is usually set to 600 pounds for every square inch at this high temperature and bonding take about 20 to 30 seconds. After the bonding, the flooring is set aside to cool and cure while protecting it from any scratches and surface imperfections that can develop due to various elements. Soon after curing, the sheets are stacked together and stored to continue acclimating. This process enhances the overall stability of the flooring. Succeeding acclimation is milling which cuts the sheets into different sized planks. The milling process uses several profiling saws that cut the edges in such a way that they can lock tightly together during installation.

Inspection and distribution

Once the manufacturing and milling process is over, the finished planks of laminate flooring are subjected to quality inspection. This mainly features inspecting the planks for aspects such as texture, correct interlocking capability, color, size and finish.
